Bear attack deterrent sprays are created under the same basic principal that all defense sprays share. Whether they have been formulated to stop man or beast, defense sprays should provide non-lethal self-defense without causing any permanent injuries.
The EPA has determined that 1.0% Capsaicin and Related Capsaicinoids (CRC) is strong enough to deter charging bears and requires that all bear attack deterrents contain a minimum of 1.0% CRC. The Frontiersman Bear Attack Deterrent, contains 1.4% CRC which is approximately 29% stronger than the required EPA level. We have chosen this formulation because it is proven highly effective in deterring bears yet it does not run the risk of permanently injuring either the bear or the outdoorsman.
Though we can control the composition of our formulations, there are many factors in the outdoors such as wind, which we cannot. If you spray a bear while positioned down wind, there is a good chance you will be exposed to the airborne microscopic droplets produced by bear attack deterrent sprays. Through our 25 years of defense spray manufacturing and independent laboratory testing, it has been determined that products exceeding 1.4% CRC may cause permanent eye damage. At 1.4%, you can be sure that Frontiersman will not cause either the individual or the bear any permanent injuries, and both will be able to continue to enjoy the great outdoors! Remember: Bear sprays are designed to protect Mother Nature and her creatures. Not to cause them harm!
